EIF invests € 20 million in Marathon Venture Capital to boost Greek Tech Innovation

The European Investment Fund (EIF) has committed € 20 million to the Marathon Venture Capital Mutual Fund III, a move aimed at strengthening Greece’s growing technology startup scene. The investment is part of the European Union’s InvestEU programme and is supported by Greece’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.

The fund will focus on early-stage business-to-business (B2B) tech startups, particularly in fields such as IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, agricultural technology, defense technology, and deep tech. Marathon Venture Capital plans to use the capital to back around 15 startups, helping to expand the local tech ecosystem and attract more private investment.

This funding round, which successfully closed at € 75 million, is part of a broader vision to support innovative entrepreneurship not only in Greece, but also across the Greek diaspora and Europe. By supporting Marathon’s fund, the EIF aims to unlock new growth opportunities for startups and scaleups that are driving change in key strategic industries.
