Amazon and PPC plan 300 MW Data Center in Kozani, Greece

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Greece’s Public Power Corporation (PPC) are planning a 300 MW data center in Kozani, Greece’s Western Macedonia region.

Under a binding memorandum of understanding, PPC will provide the land, existing buildings and supporting energy infrastructure at the former Agios Dimitrios power station, while AWS is expected to lease the completed facility for 15 years and install and operate its IT infrastructure.

The first phase is planned with a power supply capacity of 300 MW, with PPC and AWS also exploring a potential expansion of the facility to as much as 1 GW, subject to further agreements, market conditions, grid connection and regulatory approvals.

PPC has estimated investment in the initial 300 MW phase at approximately € 1.2 billion. The company previously stated that construction was expected to begin in 2026, with operations targeted for the end of 2028.

The project is also expected to use renewable electricity supplied by PPC through long-term power purchase agreements. The two companies are considering additional cooperation in cloud computing and artificial intelligence technologies as part of PPC’s digital transformation.

The investment’s first 300 MW phase is estimated to support around 400 to 500 jobs. Potential expansion to 1 GW could increase employment to around 1,500 positions.

PPC is also developing renewable energy, energy storage, green hydrogen and other infrastructure projects in the area as the region shifts towards new energy and technology related activities.
