Greece expands role for US LNG Gas Sales to Europe

Greece and the United States are deepening their energy partnership, positioning Greece as a key entry point for US liquefied natural gas (LNG) into Europe. While this strategy has been underway for some years, it was significantly reinforced at a major energy summit in Athens attended by senior U.S. officials with discussions focusing on infrastructure, investment, and regional energy security.

Greece’s LNG terminals and its Vertical Gas Corridor pipeline network are central to plans to route US gas towards Central and Eastern Europe.

As part of this partnership, Greece has signed a 20-year LNG import deal with the United States to secure a stable supply of liquefied natural gas for decades to come. Under the agreement, US LNG will be delivered to Greece’s terminals, primarily at Revithoussa, where it will be regasified, and distributed through the Vertical Gas Corridor to countries in Central and Eastern Europe.

The agreement ensures a reliable energy source for Greece and its neighbors while strengthening Europe’s ability to diversify away from Russian gas.

In addition to the long-term US LNG deal, Greece has agreed to help Ukraine by sending American liquefied natural gas through the Vertical Gas Corridor to Kyiv.

Together, these initiatives enhance Europe’s energy diversification, strengthen regional energy security, and elevate Greece’s geopolitical and economic importance in the transatlantic energy landscape.
