Greek industrial and energy group METLEN has signed a long-term agreement to supply an unnamed leading US technology company with gallium from its production facility in Greece. The agreement covers approximately 25% of the plant's expected annual gallium production.
According to METLEN, the agreement marks the first major commercial deal for the supply of European-produced gallium between a European producer and a leading US technology company. Gallium is a critical mineral used in artificial intelligence applications, advanced semiconductors, telecommunications, renewable energy technologies, and defence systems. As global gallium production remains heavily concentrated in a small number of countries, the agreement strengthens efforts to diversify supply chains and improve Europe's strategic autonomy in critical raw materials.
METLEN plans to produce gallium at its Aluminium of Greece industrial complex in Agios Nikolaos, Viotia, making it the first integrated gallium producer in Europe. The investment has been designated a Strategic Project under the European Union's Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) and is supported by € 90 million in financing from the European Investment Bank under the REPowerEU framework. The company aims to begin gallium production in 2027 and gradually increase output to around 50 tonnes annually by 2028, an amount expected to cover the European Union's entire current demand for the metal.
