Greek Government decides on renovation of the Tatoi Estate

The Greek government recently approved a study for restoration works on the former Royal Estate at Tatoi. This comprises a 10,000-acre estate located at the foot of Mount Parnitha, in the northwest of Athens.

Athens, Greece: 12 March 2021

The Greek Travel Pages writes:

“Tatoi is the birthplace of King George II of Greece and it has been the summer retreat of the former Greek Royal Family. Tatoi has been closed since 1967. In 2013, the Federation for Cultural Heritage Europe Nostra included Tatoi on its most endangered sites in Europe list. Tatoi is also protected by the Natura 2000 network as an area of outstanding natural beauty. The current official and ancient name of Tatoi is Dekeleia.”

According to the Greece’s Ministry of Culture, renovation works would begin immediately with the aim of converting the Tatoi Estate into a major tourist attraction.

The following restoration activities have been approved:

  • Recreating with furniture, textiles, art works, and items to display;

  • Re-developing the landscape and reviving agricultural and livestock activities;

  • Recreating basement areas so classes could offer educational programs;

  • Using smaller halls for hosting temporary exhibitions;

  • Setting up a cinema for screening related historical films.

According to the Ministry of Culture, emphasis will be given to recreating the original atmosphere and the genuine character of the Tatoi Estate.
