Greece records 72% decline in arriving passengers January - October 2020

According to INSETE Intelligence, 5.7 mln international air arrivals were recorded in January-October 2020 in Greece. This is 72% less than in the period January-October 2019 when international air arrivals reached 21.5 mln.

According to the Report:
 

  • In the period January – February 2020, 775,000 international air arrivals were recorded compared to 734,000 arrivals in the same period in 2019 showing an increase of 5,5%.

  • In March 2020, there was a 43.7% decrease in international air arrivals compared to the same month in 2019.

  • All airports were closed in April and May 2020, due to the Covid-19 related general lockdown imposed in Greece.

  • In June 2020, Greece experienced a 97.3% decrease in international air arrivals, and in July 2020, a decrease was 71.1% when compared to the same months in 2019.

  • 1.7 mln international arrivals were recorded in August 2010. It is 2.2 mln less than in August 2019.

  • In September 2020, 1.1 mln international arrivals were recorded. It is 64.4% less than in September 2019.

  • 732,000 arrivals were recorded in October 2020 compared to 1.7 mln during the same month in 2019.
     

Five airports in Greece recorded a decrease of more than 1 mln international air arrivals between January and October 2020 compared to the same period in 2019:
 

  • 1.9 million international air arrivals were recorded at Athens International Airports. That is 67% less than in 2019.

  • Heraklion airport recorded 898,000 international air arrivals. It is 72.6% less than in 2019.

  • 584,000 international air arrivals were recorded at Rhodes airport, showing a decrease of 75.1%.

  • Thessaloniki airport recorded 689,000 international air arrivals. That is 66.8% less than in 2019.

  • International air arrivals at the airport of Corfu amounted to 404,000.

  • Other airports recorded less than 1 mln international air arrivals: 202,000 international arrivals were recorded at Chania airport. Kos and Zakynthos airports registered 321,000 and 197,000 passengers. It is 72.7% and 77% less than in 2019.
